About Peter Wheeler, Chief Executive Officer, Special Olympics World Games Abu Dhabi 2019:

As CEO of the Special Olympics World Games Abu Dhabi 2019, Peter Wheeler is joined by a Local Organizing Committee responsible for the planning, financing and staging of the largest sports and humanitarian event in the world in 2019.

Prior to joining and moving to Abu Dhabi, Wheeler held several executive management positions with Special Olympics International, including Executive Producer and Chief of the 50th Anniversary for the Special Olympics Movement, Chief of Strategic Properties overseeing World Games, Chief Communications Officer for Special Olympics International and Executive Vice President for Special Olympics International.

In 1995, Wheeler was the Executive Director for the 1995 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Connecticut, the largest multi-sports and humanitarian event in the world that year. The Games attracted 6,500 athletes from 140 countries supported by 62,000 volunteers, attended by more than one million spectators and broadcasted worldwide. For full bio, click here.

Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohamad bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the 2019 Special Olympics World Games Abu Dhabi Bid Committee was selected by a unanimous vote of the Special Olympics International Board of Directors on November 15, 2016.

The Special Olympics World Games is the Special Olympics Movement’s flagship event, demonstrating sports excellence, which promotes equality, respect and inclusion for people with intellectual disabilities around the world. Transcending the boundaries of geography, nationality, political philosophy, gender, age, culture and religion, more than 7,000 athletes from every country on the planet will come together in March 2019 for 10 days of challenging and inspiring competition in 24 Olympic-type sports. For more information, visit
